Class 1 Make Vegetable soup!

November 20, 2009

We’ve been very busy in Class 1. On Friday 20th November we made vegetable soup.
As part of our topic on seasons we have been learning about how the season affects us. We‘ve been talking about how the weather can effect what grows, in the winter we have lots of vegetables and in the summer we have lots of tasty fruits like strawberries.
We had so much fun tasting all the vegetables and trying to chop them ready for the pot.
The soup took just under an hour to cook and we all took it in turns to stir the pot. We all tried the finished product and it was really tasty.
A wonderful winter warmer.
Check out our pictures!

Year 2 are taking a special assembly this friday. Class 2′s mums, dads and guardians are all welcome. Your all in for a special treat. Its going to be fantastic!!!

Tuck Shop up date

November 17, 2009

The School Council of Trelales Primary School has been very busy over the past year and a half, running our Fair Trade Tuck Shop.

It all started when the pupils of Trelales Primary School requested a “Snack Stall” for break times. So we took this idea to the meeting. We did a lot of research on Fair Trade Products and found a shop in Porthcawl that sells Fair Trade Products. Some of us, decided to go and visit the shop as well as researching it on the internet. We called another meeting to talk about what we had found out. We decided we should do a survey, for the whole school on who thought we should have Tuck Shop. The answer was VERY clear that most of the pupils thought it was a great idea. So after yet another meeting, we made another survey, this one was on what products we would sell, we had to ask the children which products they would like e.g. Cranberry Geobars,  Apple Juice. Once we had all the information we needed we had Mrs Gregory register us with Traidcraft. Traidcraft are a company that provide fair-trade products to schools and other organisations. Once we were registered we were able to place our first order!! Now all we had to do was wait.

Whilst we waited, we called yet another School Council meeting and came up with a simple idea. We said that we would ask the pupils if they would like to work on the Tuck Shop and write their names on a piece of paper and send it to one of the school councillors. Soon we had over 30 names that was a lot of interviews! We called them in one by one to sit on a chair in front of all the school council members and tell us if they thought they were good at counting money, dealing with money, using the correct change etc. Soon enough we had decided on our workers and made a Rota of work. We stuck the rotas all around the school for people to know what week they were working. We came up with the idea that we would have the Tuck Shop on a Friday morning in first break time. We made signs with all the class numbers on and laminated them. Then we realised we needed stock! So off we went again, we rang up Fair Trade and asked if we could place an order and for it to be delivered by the Friday. They said of course it can! We were all so excited and hoped Tuck Shop would be a great success.

Finally the Friday came! The School Council set the Tuck shop up whilst the rest of the school were in assembly. After we had finished the children were piling out of the school doors clutching their money, eager to buy their first tuck shop, fair trade product!! But first Mr Evans had to do the official opening!! At last we were ready to do business. Nearly every pupil in the school came to buy something (as well as the teachers). That first day we sold over £90’s worth of goods – we were AMAZED.

A year later we’re still going strong and hope it will continue.

The School Council at Trelales Primary has been very busy of late organising new benches for their nature area. It all started when the pupils of the school requested somewhere to sit at break times and lunch times. Somewhere to read, chat, eat their lunch or snacks on and have a peaceful break time. So we took that idea to our school council meeting. We talked and talked about the idea and we took a shine to it. As we are an environmentally friendly school we wanted to make sure the benches were made from recycled materials. One of our school councillors brought in a brochure all about these type of benches and we had a look at it. They were extremely expensive, so we asked the P.T.A of our school if we could have a share of money to help us pay for the first bench. Mr Evans the headmaster of our school agreed to buy the first bench for us. A few days later, a mother of two pupils in Trelales told us that her husband, Mr Paice, runs a company where they make benches, bins, decking etc out of composite (a material made from recycled goods). So, we sent out a letter to Mr Paice asking if he would be kind enough to sell us some benches. He replied and kindly offered to give us the three benches for half the selling price. Of course, we had to take this offer! So we waited for the benches to arrive. On Thursday 4th June, 2009 the benches were delivered. We all helped to let the lorry into the school yard. We were all super excited! When the men started unloading the benches, Mr. Paice came out of the lorry and greeted us. We had lots of photos taken. We thanked him greatly. Mr Evans, our headmaster came down to see them. Soon Mr Barrington the deputy head and year 6 teacher came to see our new surprise with his class. They loved them and said they’d be happy for the School Council to purchase more. So we took the idea to our meeting on Tuesday. We decided that we would run a stall on the Summer Fete and sell our Tuck Shop Products and Fair-trade jewellery and ornaments. We have decided that we will buy another bench out of the money we raise at the Summer Fete. Of course, if any of your readers would like to make a donation to our ‘outdoor furniture fund’ then please feel free to contact us at Trelales! We keep checking the benches every week and they are in great condition.
